In the days before Diwali, many pregnant women ask whether cleaning is safe. Diwali cleaning in pregnancy is safe for most women if the work stays light and at waist height. Hand over ladders, heavy lifting and strong chemicals, and call your gynaecologist straight away for bleeding, pain, leaking fluid, a fall or less baby movement.

Why this is in the news now: Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, with the festival days running from 6 to 10 November (Hindutone festival guide). Across Pimpri Chinchwad, homes are already being washed, painted and cleared for the festival.
Three common Diwali cleaning myths in pregnancy
Most of these come from love. A mother-in-law who will not let her daughter-in-law lift a bucket, or a husband who thinks a stool is safe because he is holding it. Here are the facts.
Myth 1: “Lifting or housework can cause a miscarriage”
This one causes the most guilt. Most early miscarriages happen because of a chromosome problem in the pregnancy, and the majority are not caused by anything the mother did. The NHS lists lifting, straining and working during pregnancy among things that are not linked to a higher risk of miscarriage (NHS 111 Wales).
So light dusting, folding clothes, wiping counters and sorting cupboards while seated are fine for most healthy pregnancies. The bigger concern is tiredness. Long hours on your feet, skipped meals and too little water leave you dizzy, and dizziness leads to falls.
Myth 2: “A stool is safe if someone holds it”
Falls are the main cleaning injury to guard against. As the bump grows, your centre of gravity moves forward and balance changes, often without you noticing. A person holding the stool cannot stop you if you tip backwards while reaching for a fan blade.
A simple rule: if the job needs a stool, a ladder or a chair, someone else does it. That covers ceiling fans, lofts, top shelves, curtain rods and the tops of cupboards.
Myth 3: “Stronger cleaners work faster, so mix them”
Never mix cleaning products. Some combinations, such as bleach with ammonia or with acid-based toilet cleaners, release fumes that are harmful for anyone, pregnant or not. The UK charity Tommy’s says the risk from ordinary household cleaners is low, and advises opening windows during and after cleaning, and taking care with oven cleaners because of their strong fumes (Tommy’s).
Wear gloves, keep the room ventilated and step out while someone else uses oven cleaner, paint or pest-control spray. If the walls are being painted, Tommy’s suggests water-based paint and a well-ventilated room.
Jobs to keep and jobs to hand over
| Usually fine | Hand over to someone else |
|---|---|
| Dusting and wiping at waist height | Fans, lofts, top shelves, anything on a stool or ladder |
| Folding clothes, sorting cupboards while seated | Moving heavy boxes, furniture or full buckets |
| Polishing small brass or silver items at a table | Oven cleaner, paint, pest-control sprays, strong acids |
| Making lists and directing the work | Scrubbing wet bathroom floors |
Take regular breaks, sit down, drink water and eat on time. If you have back ache from bending, our physiotherapy team at Next Gen Rehab can show you safer ways to bend and lift in pregnancy.
Stop and call straight away if you notice
- Bleeding or spotting, or fluid leaking from the vagina
- Tummy pain, cramps or tightening that keeps coming back
- A fall, or a bump to the tummy, even if you feel fine
- Dizziness, fainting or a severe headache
- The baby moving less than usual
If the baby is moving less, do not wait until the next day. Call your maternity unit straight away (NHS).
Before festivals, many women also ask about delaying a period with tablets. Read more in period-delay tablets: when they are advised and when they are not.

Questions women ask about Diwali cleaning in pregnancy
Can I do Diwali cleaning while pregnant?
Yes, for most healthy pregnancies, as long as the work is light and at waist height. Dusting, folding and wiping are fine. Hand over anything that needs a stool or ladder, heavy lifting, and strong chemicals such as oven cleaner, paint and pest-control sprays.
Can lifting or housework cause a miscarriage?
Normal housework and lifting are not linked to a higher risk of miscarriage. Most early miscarriages happen because of a chromosome problem in the pregnancy. Heavy loads are still best avoided because they strain the back and can make you lose balance.
Is it safe to use bleach or floor cleaner when pregnant?
Ordinary household cleaners carry a low risk if you open the windows, wear gloves and never mix products. Bleach mixed with ammonia or acid cleaners gives off harmful fumes. Leave oven cleaner, paint and pest-control sprays to someone else.
I fell while cleaning and feel fine. Do I need a check-up?
Yes. Call your gynaecologist the same day after any fall or bump to the tummy, even if you feel well. Go at once if you have bleeding, leaking fluid, tummy pain or the baby is moving less than usual.
